Workation

What does workation mean?

Workation is a portmanteau of “work” and “vacation” and refers to the combination of professional activity with a stay at a vacation location. In contrast to traditional working models such as home office or remote work, employees do not work from home or a fixed workplace during a workation, but from a location of their choice, which typically has the character of a vacation. The regular job remains the same; it is not a new job or a time-out, but the continuation of the usual work in a different environment.

Requirements for a successful workation

For a workation to run smoothly, the following requirements should be met.

  • Technical equipment: Stable Internet access and suitable work equipment are essential.
  • Self-organization: Employees should be able to carry out their tasks independently.
  • Clear agreements: Working hours, availability and expectations should be agreed in advance between employer and employee.
  • Legal framework: When working abroad, labor law and tax aspects must be taken into account, particularly with regard to residence and work permits as well as social security obligations.

Advantages of a Workation

Workstations offer numerous advantages for both employees and employers.

  • Increasing motivation: A change of scenery can provide new impetus and boost creativity.
  • Improving the work-life balance: The combination of work and relaxation can contribute to a more balanced lifestyle.
  • Attractiveness as an employer: Offering workstations can be a competitive advantage in the battle for talent.

Challenges and legal aspects

Despite the advantages, there are also challenges to consider.

  • Labor law regulations: Depending on the destination country, different labor law regulations may apply.
  • Obligation to pay social security: If you spend a longer period abroad, you may be obliged to pay social security in the host country.
  • Data protection and IT security: The use of public networks can harbor security risks.

It is therefore advisable to draw up a written agreement covering all relevant aspects before starting a workation.
