From a basement office to a leading HR software provider
ZMI Celebrates Its Anniversary: What began in 1996 with a desk in the basement of a residential building has grown into an established HR software provider with approximately 70 employees, five locations in Germany, and a comprehensive HR suite for modern human resources management. We are celebrating our 30th anniversary and looking back on three decades of technical innovations, entrepreneurial decisions, and continuous development.
The Story
When Steffen Berger founded ZMI in 1996, digital time tracking was still in its infancy. Mechanical time clocks were a common part of the workday in many places, while electronic solutions were only slowly making their way into companies.
Berger recognized the potential of this development early on and made a conscious decision to go his own way: Instead of joining an existing company, he founded ZMI and focused on developing intelligent software solutions and sales.
In collaboration with a partner who developed the hardware, the first systems for digital time tracking and access control were created.
Although it didn’t start in a garage, like many successful software companies today, it did begin in the basement of the founder’s own home. There, Berger developed the first software solutions, provided support to clients, and laid the foundation for the company. As demand grew, the office soon became too small. This was followed by new office space, additional employees, and the company’s continued expansion.
Today, the management team consists of founder Steffen Berger, who, together with his colleagues and managing partners Daniel Vogler and Jonathan Martin, continues to drive ZMI’s development.
At its headquarters in Elfershausen and at other locations throughout Germany, the company develops software solutions for all aspects of modern human resources management. What began as a time tracking system has evolved into a comprehensive HR suite that combines, among other things, staff scheduling, access control, leave management, digital workflows, and AI-powered features.
About 20 software developers are continuously working on further developing the solutions. Many of them were trained in-house.
The World of Work: Then and Now
Along with the evolution of business, the world of work has also undergone fundamental changes.
Mobile work, working from home, digital HR processes, new legal requirements, and the use of artificial intelligence are shaping today’s market. ZMI has been a part of this transformation for over three decades and has continuously adapted its solutions to meet the needs of modern businesses.
Currently, here at ZMI, we are working on, among other things, AI-powered features that relieve managers of routine tasks and provide smarter support for administrative processes.
Despite all the technological changes, our core values have remained the same to this day. We are committed to long-term customer relationships, in-house software development in Germany, and a corporate culture that fosters responsibility, trust, and initiative.
“Thirty years ago, I could never have imagined this development. I have never regretted taking the leap into self-employment. Today, I am especially proud of our team. Many of our colleagues have been with us for many years or completed their training at ZMI and now hold leadership positions. Together, we’ve built a company that combines innovation and continuity.”
Steffen Berger. Gründer und Geschäftsführer
ZMI intends to continue pursuing this path consistently in the future. The focus will be on further developing HR software, the responsible use of artificial intelligence, and supporting companies as they navigate the challenges of an increasingly digital workplace.
We are therefore using our 30th anniversary not only as an opportunity to look back on our own history, but above all to look ahead. Even after three decades, what drove us back in 1996 still guides us today: developing solutions that make companies’ day-to-day operations simpler, more efficient, and better prepared for the future.
